Construction Trail Update

Trails to be temporarily rerouted during new Museum construction

Preparation work for the construction of the new Museum has included:

  • widening of the south lane of Wakara Way
  • installation of a temporary construction fence
  • temporary rerouting of the on-site Bonneville Shoreline trails

The section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail that crosses the Museum's new site will be closed during construction hours. For personal safety, please use the rerouted trails.

UPDATE:  For the safety of trail users, the section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail that crosses the Museum's new site will be closed from Monday, March 30, 2009, at 6:00 a.m. to Friday, April 3, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. due to utility work.  Please use one of the designated alternate routes during this time. Sorry for the inconvenience.

New Utah Museum of Natural History Interior Rendering

Widening of Wakara Way

The road widening stretches from Colorow Drive eastward to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. The southeast corner of Wakara Way and Colorow will be impacted by construction traffic. Trail users are welcome during construction, but advised not to park within 25' of this intersection.

Temporary Mesh Fence

The mesh fence will be in place only during construction and will be removed once the building is complete. As of Monday, September 29, trails on the site will be temporarily rerouted during construction, but will reopen once the fence is removed. See the Trail Route Map below.


Trail Route during Construction

Construction Began August 2008 for New Museum Opening Winter 2010-2011

Construction began on the new Utah Museum of Natural History at the Rio Tinto Center in August 2008. The new world-class museum building will house over 1.2 million natural history objects, engage visitors of all ages, and showcase Utah's natural assets to the world.
