Adventures in the Natural World

UMNH 2009 Summer Camps offered children a chance to explore subjects ranging from rocks to space, from water to sound, from the ecosystems in their own backyards!

UMNH Camps are taught by experienced UMNH Science Educators.
Kids are learning while having fun!

UMNH Summer Camp 2009 for Kindergarten and First Grade: Hands-On Activities

Spaced Out

$120 per child

Launch into an outer space adventure…to infinity and beyond! Investigate the Solar System, make and launch your own rocket, create models and enjoy other spaced-out activities.

Insect-igations

There are over one million known species of insects in the world. Meet insects face-to-face while learning about their amazing variety, investigate their life cycles, create insect crafts and tour the Museum's Bugs Alive! exhibit.

Sense-Able Science

Investigate the human body and discover how we perceive the world using our senses. We’ll find and listen to our heartbeats, make a map of our tongue, and follow the digestive process while learning about healthy food choices. Create a brain hat and find out how our ears work.



Dino-Mite

$120 per child

Ready to dig into dinosaurs? We’ll use music, games, art and reading to investigate their size, what they ate, where they lived and who their closest living relatives are. Plus, tour the Paleontology Hall and lab and meet our paleontologists!

Rock Hounds

We have a landslide of activities and experiments to polish your rock study. Identify, classify and sort rocks and minerals while studying examples throughout the Museum and touring our collection area.



Animal Detectives

Join us for an amazing week dedicated to animals. We’ll investigate food webs, predator and prey interactions, habitats, defenses and much more. Plus, meet our Museum animals.


 


Water Works

What lives in a drop of water? How is rain formed? Find out as we explore all things water. Experiment with properties of water, pH, buoyancy and salinity while creating bubbles and rainbows.

Hop on over and investigate the amazing world of herpetology! Examine tadpoles, frogs and toads while exploring habitats and life cycles. Listen to frog stories and tour our Toadally Frogs! exhibit.

Budding Botanists

Uncover the secret of how plants make their own food, create leaf prints and bark rubbings, and grow your own bean plant. Examine how the structure and function of flowers, leaves, roots and stems help plants live, grow and reproduce.



Amazing Magnets

Join us for a week of magnetic discovery. We’ll investigate attraction and repulsion, magnetic fields, everyday uses of magnets and more.



Take Flight

$120 per child

Fly airplanes, spin helicopters and launch rockets! Learn about flight and measure how far your flying machine will travel. Experiment with balloons, kites and gliders and discover how birds, planes and insects are able to stay in the air.




Legends and Lifestyles

Week 7 4-Day Session

The legends and lifestyles of Native American tribes are exciting and interesting. Join us to make beads, grind corn, create sand paintings and create pottery while listening to legends and stories.

Weather Sense

Become a Junior Meteorologist and investigate clouds and weather patterns. We’ll examine growing seasons while creating rain sticks, weather vanes, sun prints and rainbows.

UMNH Summer Camp 2009 for Second and Third Grade: Experiments and Exploration

Solve It Central

$135 per child

Calling all detectives—we’ve got a crime to solve! Become a detective and sharpen your observations skills while identifying and lifting fingerprints, shoe prints and lip prints. Analyze fibers, extract DNA and visit a crime lab.

Science Mix

Do you love all types of science and just can’t decide which science classes to take? With Science Mix, you’ll get a different science class each day! Investigate chemistry, physics, optical illusions, sound, earthquakes, volcanoes, and more!

 


The Amazing Human Body

Did you know that our small intestine is about 32 feet long, our lungs have the same surface area as a tennis court and our heart beats almost 3 billion times over the course of a lifetime?! Join us and find out more fascinating facts about our bodies.

Geology Rocks

Identify and classify rocks, minerals and crystals while examining samples throughout the Museum. Create your own stalactites and stalagmites while investigating how mountains, canyons and caves are formed.

FULL-DAY PARTNER CAMP with Red Butte Garden!
Unique plants and animals surround us! Join the Red Butte staff for nature-inspired art projects, journaling, birding and an in-depth look at all living things around the Garden. At UMNH, slip into full-'scale' investigations, examining the amazing world of herpetology by studying live and preserved amphibians and reptiles. Discover ecosystems they inhabit, examine their lifecycles, get a behind-the-scenes tour of our Toadally Frog! exhibit.



Drop campers off at Red Butte Garden by 8:30 am and pick them up at UMNH at 4:30 pm. Mid-day transportation between sites is provided.


Where the Wild Things Are

Week 4 4-Day Session

FULL-DAY PARTNER CAMP with Children's Theatre and School of the Arts! Start the day at Children’s Theater to experience casting, learning lines, rehearsing and performing in the play, “Where the Wild Things Are.” Back at UMNH, campers will investigate the animal kingdom, investigating life-cycles, survival, predator/prey relationships and habitats.


Week 4 is a 4-Day Session due to the University campus holiday closure on July 3.

Drop campers off at Children's Theatre by 8:30 am and pick them up at UMNH at 4:30 pm. Mid-day transportation between sites is provided.


Junior Explorers

FULL-DAY CAMP! Explore the University of Utah campus and labs! Investigate the Utah Museum of Natural History, the Seismograph and Meteorology Labs, the Sound Studio at Gardner Hall, and many more locations. Plus, take part in projects related to each visit.



Art and Science for Girls Only

FULL-DAY PARTNER CAMP with Bad Dog Rediscovers America!
In the mornings at Bad Dog Studio, look at the work and contribution of Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keeffe and Kara Walker. Back at UMNH, explore several science themes including physics, chemistry and biology. Each day will be a new project and experiment.


Drop campers off at Bad Dog Studio by 8:30 am and pick them up at UMNH by 4:30 pm. Mid-day transportation between sites will be provided.


Utah Time Travelers

Week 7 4-Day Session

FULL-DAY PARTNER CAMP with This is the Place Heritage Park!
While at This is the Place Heritage Park, experience pioneer life by caring for farm animals, riding ponies, attending pioneer school, pulling handcarts, creating pioneer crafts and more! In the afternoon, campers will be at UMNH where they’ll investigate the legends and lifestyles of several Native American tribes—both past and present. We’ll grind corn, create pottery and instruments, dye and weave wool all while listening to and discussing legends and stories.

 

 

 

Week 7 is a 4-Day Session due to the University campus holiday closure on July 24.

Drop campers off at This is the Place Heritage Park by 8:30 am and pick them up at UMNH by 4:30 pm. Mid-day transportation between sites will be provided.


Water Wise

$135 per week

Water shapes the world around us. It is the basis of life and our environment here on Earth. Campers will carry out hands-on experiments to explore some of the properties of the amazing water molecule while discovering how it facilitates life. From snow to oceans, we will have fun discovering the wacky workings of water…one drop at a time.

Simple Machines

Campers will investigate the lever, the inclined plane, the wedge and the screw-to name a few. We’ll combine them and investigate a variety of ways that things move and what causes them to change speed and direction.

Flying Wild

FULL-DAY PARTNER CAMP with Tracy Aviary!
Discover that what goes up, must come down! From airplanes, balloons and rockets to kites, insects and birds—join us for a week of flight study! At Tracy Aviary, examine the exciting world of birds from bone density, beaks and feet to flight patterns and habitats. Plus see live bird demonstrations! At UMNH, investigate the forces of aerodynamics, rocket design and buoyancy through hands-on activities and model making.

 

 

 

Drop campers off at Tracy Aviary by 8:30 am and pick them up at UMNH by 4:30 pm. Mid-day transportation between sites will be provided.


Get Outdoors!

$135 per week

Examine the outdoors through observations and discussions with the guidance of an expert science educator. Discuss bugs, birds, plants, dirt and anything else that comes across our path! Come prepared to be outside, exploring and having fun!

Science Chef

Your kitchen is a laboratory full of strange chemicals like sodium chloride, acetic acid and sucrose. When certain chemicals are combined they can become explosively delicious! Campers will create numerous science experiments/recipes they can actually eat and share with family at home! Campers will also learn that a good cook is a safe cook along with the tools of the trade.

Rhythm and Sound at Bad Dog

FULL-DAY PARTNER CAMP with Bad Dog Rediscovers America!
Start the day at Bad Dog Studio to explore rhythm and sound through exciting art projects. Create and play your own musical instruments and discover that patterns have rhythm. Design and build a "thing-a-ma-gong" as a group. While at UMNH in the afternoons, discover how light and sound are created through experiments, projects and field trips.

UMNH Summer Camps for Fourth and Fifth Grade: Skills and Tools

Great Salt Lake Field Camp

$225 per child
$205 for UMNH Members

FULL-DAY CAMP! Explore the Great Salt Lake and surrounding environments. Discover how this salty terminal lake serves as both hotel and restaurant to over five million birds each year. Investigate brine shrimp life-cycles, the salinity and pH of Great Salt Lake, plant and animal life, the history of the Lake, and much more. Part of the week will be spent at the Lake itself, at Farmington Bay, and at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.

In the mornings at UMNH, slip into full-’scale’ investigations examining the amazing world of herpetology! Studying live and preserved amphibians and reptiles. FULL-DAY CAMP! Ladies, join us for active science investigations. Exercise your problem-solving skills and independent thinking. Meet woman who have chosen science careers and explore some of the cool things they are doing. Field trips on and off the University campus, experiments, projects and more await you!

Junior Girl Scouts

Week 7 4-Day Session
See Girl Scout site for prices. Girls can use Cookie Money to pay for this camp.

FULL-DAY CAMP! Junior Girl Scouts, spend a week at the Utah Museum of Natural History and earn at least three badges: Aerospace, Science in Everyday Life, and Water Wonders. Create and test airplanes, kites, and rockets! Visit the Hill Air Force Base Aerospace Museum and departments at the University of Utah. Mix colors, investigate the water cycle, water districts, and more! Transportation included via the University of Utah shuttle system. Badges not included. This event is in partnership with the Utah Girl Scout Council.

Beyond Birds

FULL-DAY PARTNER CAMP with Tracy Aviary!
Join us as we explore all things that fly from insects and balloons to kites, rockets and birds! While at UMNH, investigate Bernoulli’s principle of flight and experiment with wind flow. Examine the history of hot air ballooning. Examine fulcrum points and create a catapult, measuring how far items can be launched. While at Tracy Aviary, have up-close experiences with live birds, create bird models and discover all the adaptations birds posses to make them the most aerodynamic acrobats in the air.

Museum Mystery

FULL-DAY CAMP! This camp has the perfect combination of mystery and hands-on forensic investigations. Conduct fingerprinting tests, create secret formulas, master Morse code, use paper chromatography and build spy tools. Are you up to the challenge?

Invisible Waves and
Rhythm Makers

FULL-DAY PARTNER CAMP with Bad Dog Rediscovers America!
In the mornings, while campers are at UMNH, they’ll be exploring how light and sound are created through experiments, projects and field trips. While at Bad Dog Studio in the afternoon, instructors will work with campers to find rhythm in all their art projects. Using found objects, we will draw and paint to music and discover how anything can become an instrument to create rhythm.

Anatomy and Dissection

$145 per child
$125 for UMNH Members

Did you know that an earthworm has five hearts and they breathe through their skin? That starfish have no front or back and can move in any direction without turning using a complex hydraulic system? That a crayfish has a body made up of segments, not all of which are externally apparent? And that a cow’s heart is very similar to a human’s heart—just 8 times larger?! Investigate the similarities and differences between animal and human anatomy through projects, activities and dissection labs.

Science and Art Mix

FULL-DAY PARTNER CAMP with Bad Dog Rediscovers America! In the mornings at UMNH, examine several science themes such as physics, chemistry and biology. Each day will be a new project and experiment! Then mix it up with Bad Dog art instructors as they create an array of collage art projects. Build sculptures out of recycled materials, compose an abstract collage with a variety of paper and make relief sculptures out of natural materials.

 


 

Drop camper off at UMNH by 8:30 a.m. and pick them up at Bad Dog Studio by 4:30 p.m. Mid-day transportation between sites is provided.

NEW in '09! UMNH Summer Class for Eighth and Ninth Grade

DNA Crime Solvers

$145 per child
$125 for UMNH Members

Join us for a week of forensic science and super sleuthing! Map and analyze a mock crime scene, collecting and examining evidence including lifting and inspecting shoe, lip and fingerprints. Identify unknown chemicals to determine if a particular stain is animal or human blood. Conduct DNA testing, interview witnesses, and participate in a handwriting analysis and ink chromatography. End the week figuring out "who dun it" and making sure that the results can stand up in a court trial. Plus, work with officers from the Salt Lake City Crime Lab and tour their facility.

Summer Camp Registration

Your registration will be confirmed via e-mail whether you register by mail, in person, over the phone, or online. Your registration is not finalized until you receive a confirmation notice. For questions, please contact us at programs@umnh.utah.edu.

UMNH Summer Camp Cancellation Policy 2009

Pre-registration is required for all camps. If you need to cancel your registration, a refund less 20% will be given until one week prior to the camp start date. If you need to transfer your camper from one camp and into another camp, you will be charged a $15 processing fee. Due to teacher and supply commitments, no refunds, credits or transfers can be given for cancellations made less than one week prior to the camp start date. In the unlikely event your camp is canceled by UMNH, you may apply payment toward another program or receive a full refund. Please allow four weeks to receive a refund check.
