Paleontology 101

UMNH - Paleontology 101Paleontologists are like detectives. They search for clues in the form of fossilized hard parts such as bones, teeth, and shells. These bits of evidence are used to interpret how ancient creatures lived, died, and changed through time.

The most obvious place to search for clues is out in the badlands of the world: areas sculpted by erosion where rocks of the right age and type are exposed. But museums are also places of discovery. As knowledge grows and technologies improve, we are able to pry new secrets from old fossils sitting on museum shelves.
